Repair an xp Installation

For windows xp users, You have an option to repair installation. A Repair Install will replace the system files with the ones found on the windows xp installation cd but will leave your applications, files and settings where they are. But all windows updates are lost, you have to update them again.

First boot from the win xp cd. Press Enter to start the installation.Do not choose to Repair Installation on this screen. Then press F8 to accept to the license agreement. In the next screen press R to repair the windows installation. Only necessary files will be copied to the hard drive.

Windows will then begin to load and the computer will then reboot. Let the computer boot itself from the hard disk and complete the installation. This repair installation is useful when computer is affected by some malware, and you do not want to loose your installed programs and documents on your computer in formatting the hard disk.

What you should backup before reinstallation

Methods of backing up depends on your present situation. Most of you may not have created a bootable disk, either a floppy disk or a cd. There is a program called PE Builder which lets you make a bootable cd. Which you can download freely. You have to install the program first on your computer and then create a bootable disk using the program. It creates an image of all the settings on your computer on a cd. So when your computer becomes un-bootable for some reason; you can boot using PE Builder bootable cd and restore your computer to its original state.

download PE Builder

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

But if you have not created such a cd and you are unable to boot into your computer then for linux savvy people there is a way, you can use a pclinux bootable cd (if you already have one) to boot into your computer and then copy the data or write it on a cd. But if you do not have such a bootable cd, then you will have to use another computer to help you out. You can take out the hard disk from your computer (not for laptops) and connect it as a slave disk to another computer and copy the data. Then format the disk and connect it back to your computer and begin re-installation.

Do a regular backup

If you have a cd or a dvd writer connected to your computer or laptop then it is a good habit to make monthly backups of all the downloaded programs, songs, movies, pictures, text files , favorites etc etc. And then delete them from your hard disk. In this way when you create a new backup cd next month you will have different files on it, and your hard disk will have more space, and on top of it if your computer crashes for some reason, all your data will be backed up. This is more essential for laptop users because in case of a crash it is different than for a computer user. On a computer you can take out your hard disk and get the data out of it. It is not the same for a laptop.

Back up on the same hard disk

If you have another partition on your hard disk then you can copy all your files on that partition. For example you have two partitions C and D. Your windows is installed on C. Now you want to do a re-installation. Then you can copy all your files from My documents, downloads, songs, videos, images etc to your D drive. Then at the time of installation, delete only the C partition. ( and Do not delete the D partition ! ). Then create a new partition in the unpartitioned space, which will again become your new C partition. Now continue with installation by choosing to install windows on C partition.

This process will give you all the benefits of a new installation still keeping all your data safe on your D drive.

Use this method if you do not have the facility of backing up your data on cds/dvds

Prerequisites

Here is a check list before you consider to re-install windows on your computer

1) You will first need to back up all important information, all downloaded programs, text files, movies, songs, pictures, favorites, the complete My Documents folder etc. from your computer to a cd or a dvd using any cd/dvd burning software before you start re-installation.

2) A cd of windows software . Find out the cds or dvds that came with your laptop or your computer . There may be a software recovery disk, and a windows cd. Also the driver cds for printers, modems, network card, display adapter etc. in case of windows98/2000. win XP users do not need additional driver cds, except internet connection setup cd that came with your internet service provider.

Boot from your windows cd

Insert the windows cd in your cd drive and reboot your computer from the cd. The cd starts the installation procedure. If it doesn't boot from the cd , then press either F2/F7/delete whichever applicable depending on your type of motherboard during boot process to enter the bios settings, and change the boot order so that your computer boots from your cd first.

Installation procedure

For windows98

First you need to boot from your cd, and get in the dos mode. There you will be able to use the fdisk utility to repartition your hard disk. First boot in dos mode. Then run the command fdisk c:\ . It will begin the dos based fdisk program. There are keyboard commands to run the program. First delete the logical drives, extended partition, and then the primary partition in that order. After that you need to create a primary partition, extended partition and logical drives in the extended partition. After that make the primary partition active. Then exit fdisk. Reboot from the cd to start the installation. Now the formatting will take place after that installation of win 98 begins. Once You complete partitioning using fdisk, then restart and begin with windows installation. During installation the new partitions are formatted and the installation process begins. Once you complete the basic installation then you need to install display adapter, sound driver, network adapter, modem driver, printer driver and drivers for any other hardware that your computer may have.

For windows XP

Upgrade or New Install

On the installation screen It asks if you want to upgrade or to do a new install. Select new install. (this applies to fresh or new installation, For those who want to upgrade from previous versions of Windows to a newer version can choose to upgrade. It will keep all the data and installed programs and convert the previous version to the newer version)

Partitioning Hard Disk

These steps apply if you are doing a clean new install erasing all previous data from your computer hard disk. When the installation cd detects your computer hardware and stop at a screen. Press Enter to start Installation. Then press F8 at the next screen to agree the licence agreement. In the next window you can delete existing partitions. By selecting the partition by arrow keys and pressing D, press L to confirm, delete all the partitions you will get one single unformatted space.

Now create new partitions in the unpartitioned space. Press C to create new partitions. When all unpartitioned space has been converted to new partitions, select the uppermost c drive, or c partition to install windows on.

Types of partitions

Primary partition : This is the type of partition needed to install an operating system.

Extended Partition: You can create an extended partition only when you have at least one primary partition on your hard disk

Logical drives: These are further partitions within an extended partition.

For win xp users : At the time of installation if you are unsure how much space to allocate to each partition. Then create only one partition C of 1/4 th of the size of your total hard disk capacity, or about 20 GB whichever is lower and after completing formatting and installation, you can create partitions in the remaining unpartitioned space. By going to start %26gt; control panel %26gt; Administrative Tools %26gt; Computer Management %26gt; Disk Management. Look at the graphics of your hard disk. Right click on unpartitioned space to get a menu to create new partition. Choose the type and size of partition. Format the newly created partitions by right clicking on it and choosing the type of

filesystem either FAT32 or NTFS. The computer will format the drive. It will ask what type of format you want ntfs or fat32. For winXP ntfs is better, unless you have special resaons to convert in fat32 like accessibility to disk partition in linux.

More about Microsoft File systems

Microsoft file systems are FAT12, FAT16,FAT32,NTFS and NTFS5

all later versions starting with windows98 support FAT32 file system

NTFS was created with windows NT and all later versions support it.

Please read more about comparative performance of different microsoft file systems on the link below http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

Proceeding with installation

There will be many screens where you have to click on to proceed. Keep reading what comes on the screen and make your choices. Your computer will reboot a few times during the course of installation.

Dual boot installation/ Multiple boot installation

If you had been using win98 for a long time and you like to keep using it then there is an excellent option for you to keep both win98 and the newer window on your computer. If you have win98 on C drive then you can install the newer window on D drive, and you can boot into any one of them by choosing at the boot time. If you have a hard disk large enough or if you use more than one hard disks then you can use all the versions of windows listed at boot time. Just you need to install each one of them on a separate partition on the same or another hard disk.

At one time I had win98 + win2000 + win 2003 + winXP + linux on the same pc.

WARNING : If you had a problem of your computer restarting itself while you were using it, first check the fan behind your smps power supply, and also check the fan above the processor, If there are some problems which remain even after reinstallation then you should consider to show your computer to a hardware technician to check for faulty computer parts.

and the other thing also is this way

1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, or insert the first Windows XP Setup disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer.

Note To start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM (or from the startup disk), your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the floppy disk drive. In some cases, you may have to modify your computer's BIOS settings to set this configuration. For information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the floppy disk drive, see the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact the computer manufacturer.

2. If you are starting the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do this.

3. At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.

4.

Note If you are using the Setup disks (6 bootable disks), the setup will prompt you to instert the Windows XP CD.

5. Press F8 to accept the Windows XP Licensing Agreement.

6. If an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you are prompted to repair it. To bypass the repair, press ESC.

7. All the existing partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partition or the unpartitioned space where you want to create a new partition. Press D to delete an existing partition, or press C to create a new partition by using unpartitioned space. If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this step for each of the existing partitions that you want to use for the new partition. When all the partitions are deleted, select the remaining unpartitioned space, and then press C to create the new partition.

Note If you want to create a partition where one or more partitions already exist, you must first delete the existing partition or partitions, and then create the new partition.

8. Type the size in megabytes (MB) that you want to use for the new partition, and then press ENTER, or just press ENTER to create the partition with the maximum size.

9. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to create additional partitions if you want them.

10. If you want to install Windows XP, use the ARROW keys to select the partition where you want to install Windows XP, and then press ENTER. If you do not want to format the partition and install Windows XP, press F3 two times to quit the Windows Setup program, and then do not follow the remaining steps. In this case, you must use a different utility to format the partition.

11. Select the format option that you want to use for the partition, and then press ENTER. You have the following options: • Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)

• Format the partition by using the FAT file system (Quick)

• Format the partition by using the NTFS file system

• Format the partition by using the FAT file system

• Leave the current file system intact (no changes)

The option to leave the current file system intact is not available if the selected partition is a new partition. The FAT file system option is not available if the selected partition is more than 32 gigabytes (GB). If the partition is larger than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT32 file system (you must press ENTER to confirm). If the partition is smaller than 2 GB, the Windows Setup program uses the FAT16 file system.

Note If you deleted and created a new System partition, but you are installing Windows XP on a different partition, you will be prompted to select a file system for both the System and startup partitions.

12. After the Windows Setup program formats the partition, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to continue. After the Windows Setup program is completed, you can use the Disk Management tools in Windows XP to create or format more partitions.
