the thing that pops up is called Microsoft visual C++ runtime library
it says runtime error!

Something you could check is your system requirements (video/graphics card, sound card, RAM). If they don't meet KotOR's minimum requirements, it'll simply not work right. It should say the system requirements on the back or bottom of the box. You can also check in the troubleshooting section of the manual.
