Please help me if you can. My computer is saying Runtime Error!?

I don't have a clue what happened but I cannot access most of my programs. My documents, certain things on control panels too.

It says:

Runtime Error!

Program:C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

This program has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

What is wrong? Who do I contact?

This sucks!

Please help me if you can. My computer is saying Runtime Error!?

Make a backup of all the important files (documents) as far as that's still possible and as far they are on the same physical harddisk.

Like, on a external SATA harddisk or on a 4GB USB-flash stick or on a DVDR (if the burnsoftware still works).

Not neccesary in this order (but [0)] is always a good idea):

1)

Run a scandisk. If not possible:

Take out the harddisk (be careful, it's delicate equipment). Put it in another PC (as the second or third harddisk). Then run a scandisk on it.

2)

Insert the Operating System CD. Reinstall it (copy all the OS files again over the current ones).

3)

Try www.windowsupdate.com.

If that won't work either, you might need a CLEAN reinstallation of a Operaring System (format the disk. In that case: please make TWO different type of backups of your valuable data and check them on another PC).

If doing so: i recommend at least two physical harddisks in the new situation (for making backups: if one drive fails, you still have the backup) and use Norton Ghost to backup the system drive (C-drive) now and then.

4)

Disconnect the internet cable (physically), disable any background programs (with msconfig.exe: uncheck every startup program, then reboot). If then the same errorous programs suddenly DO work: some of those background programs is the source of the error. Then remove that program or choose an alternative or newer version.
Reply:Explorer.exe is the whole entire user interface of windows. Without it, you can only run programs from the task manager or console. Call Microsoft support or someone. You'll probably need to re install Windows.
Reply:use system restore or put windows cd in and boot to it and do a repair windows
Reply:Does it happen every time you start up?

Scan your computer for viruses and spyware.
Reply:I had the same problem not too long ago. I had to save all my files to a disk. Then, I had to contact microsoft (it's best to contact them by phone) so they could assist me with a reinstallation. Just a word of caution: If you do this, be prepared to be on the phone for 3 to 4 hours. It may not take that long, but I was tied up for a while. Also, don't forget to save all your software/downloads. You will lose them during the reinstallation.
Reply:wish i had better news for ya, but when windows explorer gets a runtime error it means you have corrupted code in the operating system. try to first re-install windows. dont worry, you wont lose anything if you make sure during the install process you choose "repair" instead of "new install". you cant TRY to do a virus scan, but i doubt it'll help
Reply:could be a virus, I would research it here:

Reply:Having problems with explorer.exe is serious business.

Try running your computer in safe mode.... If you still get the error. you will likley have to reinstall your O/S.
