How to get rid of computer infected icon appears on icon tray, Pest Control?

I have windows 98 [2000 compaq presario, intel celeron, 15gb, 667mghz, 64mb RAM], and the bottom of my icon tray i get a red circle with a white x in it meaning my computer is infected. I dont know how to get this off, and everytime i click on it a Pest Control thing pops up telling me to accept, so I went to Find, and deleted the file pest control. Except the red circle keeps on appearing, and I am afraid something is wrong with my computer. Most of my systems work except the internet explorer icon which i rarely use and just sign on the internet using the SBC browser. When I try opening the Internet explorer icon something pops up about a runtime error with C++ and closes the window, and most of the time freezes my computer. I dont know if the red circle will go away by itself because as of right now i can access all functions except IE icon, and is just a nuance exploiting a deep fear of something that may happen. Please help for how to get rid of this icon.

your computer is all screwed up basically, reformat is your basic bet, its a mess, 98 is a security risk no updates for that anymore from microsoft
