Yup, that'd be Microsoft Windows. Whilst modern, professional operating systems such as Mac OS X and Linux have advanced security, Microsoft Windows is still plagued with malware. As you've already found out the hard way, Microsoft Windows isn't safe to use on-line as it is. You need to get a full security suite that can not only remove infections, but also offers "real time" protection. I'd suggest you purchase from a reputable, professional company such as:

You may be past the point of no-return though, and a reinstall may be your only option.

Also bear in mind that there is no point removing a virus if you don't then take precaution against re-infection!

Unfortunately, those security suites aren't good enough by themselves - you'll still need to ensure that "automatic updates" are on so that you get all the bug fixes from Microsoft.

You should also avoid using the built-in mini-applications that come with Windows. The cut-down web browser "Internet Explorer" is a common vector for malware. A simple upgrade to Firefox will help here.

You can get some great add-ons for Firefox too - don't forget to check those out!

The single-protocol "MSN Messenger" is another common infection point, a quick upgrade to Pidgin and you're chatting with more friends in greater safety.

If you've purchased Microsoft Office, then you'll be attracting more Microsoft bugs. Open Office is a great, free alternative:

And of course, if you ever get fed up with Windows, viruses, defragging, fixing the registry and slowdowns, remember that you do have a choice! Linux is a great free upgrade. Its virus-free and you can dedicate your full hardware resources to what you enjoy - rather than trying to keep the operating system functioning!
